Helpful Tip Tuesday: Easy Homemade Yogurt

“Homemade yogurt? Sounds difficult. I can’t do that!” As Bob the Builder always says, “YES YOU CAN!” (Bob used to be my son’s favorite show. ) Let me show you how… (pictures coming soon I promise!! As soon as I can find the file!)

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups Whole Milk
  • 1 small Yogurt cup (or 1/2 c)
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla

 

 

Pour milk in your crock pot and turn it on LOW for 2 1/2 hours.

Then turn off and unplug your crockpot and let it sit for 3 more hours.

Spoon out about 1 1/2 cups of the milk into a bowl. Wisk in the yogurt, sugar and vanilla. Return the milk to the crockpot.

Wrap the crockpot up in a thick towel or blanket so it is completely covered and put it in your oven and let it sit there for 8-10 hours.

(DON’T TURN ON YOUR OVEN!!! I take out the top rack and put it on top of the stove to remind me that there is something in the oven.)

After 8-10 hours your yogurt is finished! See?!? Wasn’t that easy? You just made 64 oz +1/2 cup of yogurt for about $1. Wowzers! If you are regular yogurt eaters, this savings really adds up!

 

*It will be a little runnier than the store bought stuff. So if you’d like it a little thicker, you can strain it using a cheese cloth to get rid of excess moister.

Variations: My sister doesn’t add sugar to it but she adds homemade jam instead! That would be delicious. Or if you like plain yogurt, don’t add the vanilla and use plain yogurt as the starter instead.  You can also omit the sugar.
